By default, our country is home to many awe-inspiring environmental wonders. We possess 70% of the world’s diverse wildlife. Our country harbors a lot of different unique creatures. The existence of the tarsier, pilandok and sinarapan are testaments to that statement. Aside from that, our territory boasts a wonderful coastline where tourists flock yearly. It is a place where one can see the golden sun rising from the blue horizon; a place where clean wind flows as one spends his afternoon underneath a cool tree.

At least, that is what we keep on hearing from the generation before us. Sadly, reality opens our eyes that the world is not what it used to be. A slight share of rain used to mean a bountiful harvest for our farmers. Now, it is tantamount to having flashfloods in the city. Now, rain would mean the cause of the denudation of forests. Acid rain: that is one of the causes of deforestation; the effect of the accumulation of greenhouse gases which is, in turn, caused by the entrapment of carbon dioxide within our atmosphere. That is the result of human activity

It is often said that progress and care for the environment cannot be done simultaneously as the activities that foster human progress always hampers the ability of the environment to heal itself. For example, industrial plants may create countless jobs. They may produce materials to be sold in the market or they may produce parts needed for manufacturing; however, it contributes to pollution by either belching out smoke or dumping waste in nearby bodies of water. Likewise, illegal logging and dynamite-cyanide fishing speed up their respective processes but they also speed up the death of the environment.

Well, we need to prove this theory wrong. We must let the world know that the Philippines is capable of making progress while saving the environment. The time for us to do something is now. Who is best suited to save the future of our country but ourselves? We can do quite a lot, actually. One can join environmental advocacies such as the Greenpeace movement. They host activities such as tree-planting programs and even triathlons that help raise money to fund other projects. If that’s not your thing, you can join the activities funded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Recently, they have participated in the International Coastline Cleaning Event. If you want to keep things simple, fold out that notebook and start composing literary pieces that encourage others to participate in such events.

Always remember: if there’s a will, there’s a way; “kung ayaw, may dahilan; kung gusto, maraming pwedeng paraan” that is a song that frequently visits the airwaves nowadays. It’s true after all. It’s up to us. It won’t be American nor Australian kids who’ll be working in those high-rise buildings after ten or fifteen years. It will be us. It won’t be British nor Brazilian people who will be residing in our suburbs after ten or fifteen years. It will be us. The problems that we face now must be solved sooner or later. We have the capacity. It is WE who hold the key to a better future. Prove to the world that Filipino kids can make a change.

A Movie Review: Dead Poets Society

I usually dislike fictional films that we relate to the academe especially if they are made before the 1990’s but I have to admit that this film got my attention. Armed with a touching plot that will surely inspire students and adults alike, Dead Poets Society is a must-see for anyone who likes to feel everything through his/her heart.

Directed by Peter Weir, the story is set in a fictional Welton Academy, a prep school for high society boys in Vermont. This awe-inspiring film tells a story of an English teacher (Robin Williams) who inspires his students to change their lives of conformity, always abiding by the rules, into something adventurous yet wise. He uses unique and unorthodox methods to teach his students that poetry is an embodiment of emotion; going as far as letting his students tear the pages of their books.

The students, being sons of wealthy men in society, are under constant pressure by their parents. Most of them are not given the freedom to choose what they want to do in life and so a struggle within the students’ selves ensues. Mr. Keating, the English teacher, tells them, “Carpe diem. Seize the day” he says. Throughout the journey, the students revive a society where their English teacher once belonged to.

You’ll laugh, cry, cheer; that is what you will be doing once you watch this film. Their exceptional acting skills make the entire movie heartfelt. From casual jokes and gestures to awkward rituals and events; with a twist in every side and a turn in every corner, this film will make you emote to the extreme. It also presents nice visual effects, considering that this film was made in 1989. The shadows, the lights, the canoe-occupied river, they all fit in harmony.

It is indeed a wonderful plot with a wonderful message. There is one more thing, though. The great thing about this great film is its great ending. It’ll make your imagination go wild. For anyone who seeks to be daring; for anyone who wants to seize the day, watch this film. And for that, I give it a rating of 9 out of 10.

the Pain of Rejection :|

As Economics dictates, resources are limited. We cannot have everything that we want. Heck, some even can’t have everything that they need. Of course, I’m not limiting the “need and want” thing to its literal denotation. What I mean is that it tells us that this world has its limits. It cannot give us everything that we desire. Whenever that happens, we get the sense of rejection. It’s that bitter feeling that we are not loved; that we are not cared for. “Rejected” Yes, that is the term. The word that seems to wrap a person in a pitfall of depression; the word that has the capacity and power to smear one’s pride: that is rejection. Despite this seemingly sad introduction, we cannot hesitate to ask ourselves, “What on earth is rejection, really?”

Rejection, as believe by a lot of people, is mainly negative. I won’t argue with that, and you, my dear reader, would do well by agreeing with me. It’s true. I mean, who would want to be rejected? No one wants to be rejected whether the thing that we want is something mundane and superficial such as our parents buying us a car when we finish high school or if it’s something deep and serious like asking someone of the opposite gender to a promenade. Either way, the feeling of embitterment and slight depression is still there. Whenever I am rejected, there is this sudden feeling that a golf-sized stone just passed through my spine and hit my stomach. Yes, it has to be that specific.

There are many forms of rejection. Some may be very direct to the point; very literal in its context. Others may be so severe that it entices a person to take his/her own life. Personally, I’ve experienced a rather silent form of rejection. When someone tells or promises you about something, you should not run away from it. I consider that as rejection especially if that person happens to be someone close to you, like you put their trust in them but they just run away. Well, that’s how life works.

That’s enough about the embitterment. Whatever pain it is that rejection brings us, note that God is right there, watching us. The possibility is ever-present that we are being rejected, not because we don’t deserve something, but probably because God has something better in store for us. Never look on the dry side of the field; hence, we should strive to be optimistic. Sometimes, rejection can be perceived as a blessing in disguise. For instance, you might not pass your UPCAT but it might be a blessing in disguise. Perhaps, you’re better off at another school where you’ll be able to harness your skills even more.

Going back, we feel sad because of rejection. That’s how it is. I have something to say, though, and I quote, “Happiness can sometimes resemble glass. Even though you can’t see it, it’s still definitely there. You just have to change your point of view sometimes” Rejection hurts but it lets us grow in strength and in spirit; in mind and in heart.
